Bathroom Faucet Buying Guide: Types, Fit and Finish
The bathroom faucet is the fixture you touch most often in the room, so it should feel good in the hand, suit the basin it serves and fit the holes already in your vanity. Brass bathroom faucets come in a few main configurations, and the right one depends mostly on your sink and countertop. This guide explains each option, what to measure, and how to coordinate the faucet with the rest of the room.
The main bathroom faucet types
| Type | Holes | Best for | Things to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single hole | 1 | Compact vanities, powder rooms, vessel sinks with a tall spout | Spout height and reach relative to the basin |
| Widespread | 3 | Standard and double vanities | Center to center spacing, commonly 8 inches |
| Centerset | 3 on one base | Small vanities with 4 inch spacing | Base length versus hole layout |
| Wall mount | Valves in wall | Vessel sinks, clean countertops | Rough-in height and wall depth |
Shop by type: single hole faucets, widespread faucets and wall-mounted bathroom faucets, or see everything in bathroom faucets. If your vanity already has three holes, a widespread faucet is usually the simplest replacement. If you are starting fresh with a new top, a single hole faucet keeps the counter easier to wipe down. Measure your vanity and sink
If you are replacing a faucet, the existing holes decide most of the choice. If you are buying a new vanity top, you can choose the faucet first and have the holes drilled to suit.
- Count the holes in the sink or countertop behind the basin.
- Measure center to center between the outer holes. Widespread faucets typically fit 8 inch centers, with a common range of about 6 to 16 inches; centerset faucets use 4 inch centers.
- Measure the distance from the faucet hole to the center of the drain to judge the spout reach you need.
- Measure the countertop thickness where the faucet mounts.
- Note any backsplash, mirror or medicine cabinet that could limit height or handle swing.
Our article How to Measure Your Vanity for a Widespread Faucet walks through this with examples, and Fixture Measurements and Compatibility covers general measuring.
Match the faucet to the basin
Undermount and drop-in sinks
These are the most flexible. Any deck-mounted style works as long as the spout reaches far enough to deliver water near the drain.
Vessel sinks
A vessel bowl sits on top of the counter, so the spout must rise above the rim. A tall gooseneck single hole faucet or a wall-mounted faucet is usually the answer. Measure the bowl height and the counter to rim distance before choosing.
Pedestal and console sinks
These often have pre-drilled holes in the sink itself. Spacing is fixed, so measure carefully and choose a faucet that matches.
Spout shape and style
- Gooseneck spouts give generous clearance for washing and a graceful profile.
- Low-profile spouts sit closer to the deck and suit shallow basins or spaces with a mirror close above.
- Engraved, Victorian and resin handle details bring character to a powder room or primary bath.
Two examples: the Low-Profile Widespread Bathroom Faucet with Lever Handles and the Victorian Single Hole Faucet with Cross Handles. For wall installations, see the Wall-Mount Faucet with Lever Handles. A gooseneck generally gives more room under the spout, while a low-profile design keeps sightlines clear below a mirror or window.
Planning a wall-mounted faucet
A wall-mounted faucet frees the countertop and suits vessel sinks, but it needs more planning because the valves are installed inside the wall. Decisions must be made before tile and drywall go up.
- Choose the faucet before rough-in so your plumber can follow its specifications.
- Set the spout height so water clears the basin rim and lands near the drain.
- Confirm wall depth and the finished wall thickness, including tile.
- Plan for face plates and escutcheons to finish the wall openings.
Details are in the Fixture Installation Planning Guide. A practical tip: ask your plumber to mark the finished spout position on the framing and photograph the open wall before it is closed. Those photos are invaluable if you ever need to service the valves, hang a mirror or add shelving later, because they show exactly where the pipes run.
Handles, finish and coordination
Two-handle faucets give fine temperature control. Levers are easy to use for everyone in the household, while cross handles bring a traditional feel. Our faucets are solid brass with an unlacquered finish that develops a natural patina; learn more in The Benefits of Unlacquered Brass.
Complete the room with a matching pop up drain, towel rings, hooks and holders from bathroom accessories. Repeating the same finish on the faucet, drain and towel ring ties the room together, while a contrasting finish on a mirror frame or lighting can add depth without competing.
Living with a brass bathroom faucet
Bathroom faucets are touched many times a day, which is part of what makes unlacquered brass so appealing: the areas you handle most take on a softer tone while the rest of the faucet darkens more slowly. To keep the finish looking cared for, rinse off toothpaste and soap residue, wipe the faucet dry when convenient, and avoid bleach, ammonia or abrasive pads. If you prefer a brighter look, an occasional gentle polish restores the shine.
